The Importance of Finding the Right Pump Flange Size: Comfort and Milk Output Matter
If you’re pumping, you probably already know how much time and effort it takes—and how important it is to get it right. One thing I want to gently remind you about is the pump flange size—the part that fits over your nipple and breast.
It might seem like a small detail, but using the correct flange size can make a huge difference in both your comfort and your milk output. When the flange fits well, pumping feels easier and more effective. When it doesn’t, you might notice discomfort, pain, or even a decrease in milk flow.
Why Does Flange Size Matter?
Your nipple and breast tissue need enough room to move freely during pumping, without rubbing or pinching. If the flange is too small, your nipple can get squeezed or rub up against the sides, causing soreness, swelling, or even damage. If it’s too large, your nipple might move around too much, which can reduce suction and make pumping less efficient.
Both situations can make pumping uncomfortable and frustrating—and nobody needs that added stress during an already challenging time.
How Does the Wrong Size Affect Milk Output?
When your nipple isn’t able to move freely or the suction isn’t right, your body might not know to release the correct amount of hormones resulting in less milk expressed. Over time, this can affect your milk supply and make pumping sessions longer and more tiring.
On the other hand, using the correct flange size helps your body do its job more smoothly, so pumping can be more comfortable and productive.
How Do You Know If Your Flange Fits Right?
Signs your flange might not be the right size include:
Pain, pinching, or redness during or after pumping
Nipple appearing bruised, white, or swollen
Milk pools mostly around the nipple and not much elsewhere in the flange
Pumping sessions take longer than expected or feel ineffective
If any of these sound familiar, it’s a good idea to check your flange size.
What Can You Do?
Many brands offer flanges in different sizes, and they’re easy to swap out. Measuring your nipple diameter when not erect (just the nipple, not the areola) can help you find the best fit. We are happy to help guide you through this process and recommend the right size or even alternative flange shapes.
Remember, pumping shouldn’t hurt. Your comfort matters deeply—not only for your well-being but also for your milk production.
